Casa Baldo is an elegant modernist house nestled on a hilltop in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil designed in 1969 by famed architect Oscar Niemeyer. A dramatic white exterior spiral staircase reaches the top of a stack of box-like structures.
Niemeyer designed the house in the affluent Jardim Botânico district for his wife’s sister Carmen Baldo. Brazilian artist Adriana Varejão purchased the home in 2011 from Baldo’s descendants.
A 5-year renovation project by Siqueira + Azul Arquitetura integrated extensions to the property while respecting Niemeyer’s architectural philosophy, and restored the home to its original splendour.
